AltSchool

Context

AltSchool's platform allows educators to track learner- and educator-made goals. However, getting an overview of a group of learners is difficult and tedious. I created several proposals for a goal dashboard, allowing educators to glimpse progress for groups at a glance.

Users

AltSchool's users are educators, and by proxy their students. Educators manage small classrooms with a unique, learner-centered goal per learner. Many learner-centered programs like Montessori schools used Altschool's platform.

Ideation

I created several proposals for a goal dashboard, allowing educators to glimpse progress for groups at a glance. I explored several proposals for allowing educators to search for assignments by educational objective, and share their own objective-tagged assignments.

Considerations

Different school systems use different standards, depending on state requirements and the school's own educational philosophy. For this, we prioritized a rich tagging system for educators to browse lesson plans aligned with their requirements.

For learner-centered goals, we iterated on status and sorting to help educators filter by timely goals.

We tested both concepts with Altschool's educators to understand constraints. Insights enabled us to prioritize richer sharing permissions and archive lesson plans.

Initial launch

Goal tracking and shared lesson libraries launched initially to Altschool educators and then partners. The products received positive feedback from educators across the board.

Flashcards supporting learner-centered principles

Last, I learned a lot about moving towards a learner-centered future, thanks to the wonderful folks at education reimagined. Here are a few examples of flashcards for their principles for a learner-centered world.
