George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire is a sprawling, intricate narrative knot. However, the complexity can overwhelm; in an unknown world, it's hard to map the narrow chances and close encounters instigated by a charater's location.
To shed light on these hidden complexities, I mapped the physical journeys of thirteen major characters across the fictional continent of Westeros. The following interactive data visualization allows users to see the five whole books of movement within one screen, while offering a progression of location by time and character. The visualization was hacked together using Processing, and PrivateMajor's character notes were a world of help.
Of course, spoiler warning.
